Dauda Jawara is a Gambian politician who served as the President of The Gambia from 1970 until he was overthrown in a coup in 1994. He was the first President of The Gambia following its independence from Britain and is known for his efforts to promote education and agriculture. However, his government faced criticism for political repression and economic challenges, ultimately leading to his removal by Yahya Jammeh.
