Ferdinand Magellan
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer born circa 1480 who is best remembered for leading the first expedition to successfully circumnavigate the Earth. Commissioned by Spain, he set sail in 1519 with a fleet of five ships in search of a westward route to the Spice Islands. Magellan's journey was fraught with hardship, including crew mutinies, shipwrecks, and his own death during a conflict in the Philippines in 1521. Despite not completing the voyage himself, his expedition ultimately proved that the Earth could be circumnavigated by sea, significantly expanding European knowledge of global geography and facilitating future exploration and trade.
