James Garfield

politician United States

James A. Garfield was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his death on September 19, 1881, following an assassination attempt. Before his presidency, Garfield was a prominent Union general during the Civil War and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. His presidency was marked by a commitment to civil service reform, but his term was tragically cut short when he was shot by Charles Guiteau in a Washington, D.C. train station. Garfield survived the initial attack but succumbed to infections related to his injuries after 11 weeks of suffering, making him one of the four U.S. presidents to be assassinated while in office.
