
James Naismith
James Naismith was a Canadian physical educator, physician, and sports coach who is best known for inventing the game of basketball in 1891. Tasked with creating a new indoor sport to keep his students active during winter at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith developed the original rules and nailed a peach basket to the wall, giving birth to what would become one of the most popular sports in the world.
