Ludwig XIV, also known as Louis XIV, was the King of France from 1643 until his death in 1715. He is often referred to as the 'Sun King' and is known for his absolute monarchy, where he famously declared, 'L'état, c'est moi' ('I am the state'). His reign is marked by the centralization of power in the monarchy and the establishment of a lavish court at the Palace of Versailles, which became a symbol of royal extravagance and authority. Ludwig XIV's policies and military campaigns significantly shaped French history, but his reign also led to financial difficulties that would later contribute to the French Revolution.
