Millard Fillmore

Millard Fillmore was the 13th President of the United States, serving from 1850 to 1853. Born in 1800 in New York's Finger Lakes region, he initially pursued a career in law and entered politics as a member of the Anti-Masonic Party, later joining the Whig Party. Fillmore is known for his controversial stance on immigration during a time when many Irish and German immigrants were arriving in the U.S., often blaming them for various societal issues. He is also remembered for his role in the Compromise of 1850, which attempted to address the tensions between slave and free states. Fillmore's presidency has often been characterized by his efforts to maintain national unity amid growing divisions over slavery.
