Pavel I was the Emperor of Russia from 1796 until his assassination in 1801. The son of Peter III and Catherine the Great, Pavel's reign was marked by a series of controversial reforms that aimed to reverse many of his mother's policies. He sought to strengthen the monarchy and the military but faced significant opposition from the nobility. His unpredictable nature and authoritarian rule led to widespread dissatisfaction, culminating in a coup that resulted in his death.
