Raúl Castro Ruz is a retired Cuban politician and military leader who served as the President of Cuba from 2008 to 2018 and as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba until 2021. He is the younger brother of Fidel Castro and played a significant role in the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Under his leadership, Cuba underwent various economic reforms and increased diplomatic engagement with the United States, notably during the thaw in relations initiated by President Obama.
