Joanne Chesimard
Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, is a former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, who was convicted in 1977 for the murder of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster during a 1973 shootout. After escaping prison and seeking asylum in Cuba, she has become a symbol of resistance for some in the African American community while remaining a fugitive wanted by the U.S. government. Her case has been a focal point in discussions about U.S.-Cuba relations and the extradition of American fugitives.
