
Muammar Qaddafi
Muammar Qaddafi was the de facto leader of Libya from 1969 until his ousting and death in 2011. Known for his controversial and authoritarian rule, Qaddafi implemented a version of socialism in Libya and was a prominent figure in Arab nationalism and Pan-Africanism. His regime was marked by widespread human rights abuses and a cult of personality. In 2003, Qaddafi agreed to dismantle Libya's nuclear weapons program in a bid to improve relations with the West, which led to the lifting of sanctions. However, following the Arab Spring in 2011, he faced a popular uprising and was ultimately killed by rebel forces, leading to a prolonged civil conflict in Libya.
