Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was a young surgeon at the Red Cross Hospital in Hiroshima. On the day of the atomic bomb, he was en route to his hospital and narrowly avoided being caught in the explosion, which devastated the city. After the bombing, he took on a critical role in treating the many victims who flooded into the hospital seeking help.
