Zahraan Mamdani
Zahraan Mamdani is a 33-year-old member of the New York State Assembly, representing the 36th District in Queens since 2021. He is notable for being the first South Asian male and the third Muslim member of the assembly. Born in Uganda to Gujarati Muslim parents, Mamdani has gained recognition for his aggressive social media campaigns and support from young voters, which have significantly disrupted the political establishment. He has been a vocal critic of Israeli actions in Gaza and advocates for Palestinian rights. Recently, he won the Democratic primary for the mayoral election in New York City, and if successful in the November 2025 election, he would become the city's first Muslim and first South Asian mayor.
