Emma Lazarus
Emma Lazarus was an American poet and activist born on July 22, 1849, in New York City. She is best known for her sonnet 'The New Colossus,' which was inscribed on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Her work reflects her commitment to the ideals of immigration and the welcoming of 'huddled masses yearning to breathe free.' Lazarus was a prominent advocate for the Jewish community in the United States and used her writing to address social injustices and the plight of immigrants. She passed away on November 19, 1887, but her legacy endures through her contributions to American literature and cultural identity.
