After his presidency, Lula faced legal challenges and was imprisoned on corruption charges, although his convictions were later annulled. He returned to politics and won the 2022 presidential election, defeating the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, which has positioned him at the center of Brazil's current political landscape.
