Pol Pot
Pol Pot was a Cambodian revolutionary and politician who served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea from 1963 until 1981. He is best known for leading the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979, during which he orchestrated a brutal campaign of social and political engineering that resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people, roughly a quarter of Cambodia's population at the time. Pol Pot aimed to transform Cambodia into a rural, classless society based on his interpretation of Marxist-Leninist principles, leading to the forced evacuation of cities, widespread famine, and mass executions. His regime was characterized by its extreme repression and human rights abuses, and it has left a lasting impact on Cambodia's history and collective memory.
